So, here’s my thoughts on what was happening, in case it helps others: the ASUS, or cabling, was causing packet loss for the UDP stream (which I am assuming Plex is using since it wouldn’t make sense to use TCP for video), this loss was being interpreted as server encoding failure by the Roku. I did have one failure over about 60 minutes, but it recovered and worked for the remainder of the show I was watching. I removed the ASUS from the setup and wired everything to the Cisco and now all is (mostly) well. This allowed the ASUS to pass data between the server and NAS, and the rest of the network, at 1Gb. In an effort to speed up access between my FreeNAS box and my server, I added an ASUS AC-66 router that has four 1Gb ports. My setup consists of an older 48port Cisco switch that has forty-eight 100Mb ports and two 1Gb ports. The problem seems to have popped up in the last week.Īnyone else have similar issues? Thoughts on what to try next?Īs I was continuing to troubleshoot my issue, I decided to simplify the networking setup a bit to try and eliminate variables. I think that covers everything that I’ve tried. I tried two different FireSticks using the Plex app and had no issues. I continued with direct play turned off and the result was that the file would play without buffering, but had no audio. Turned off Direct Play on Roku: the result was that Roku issued a message screen indicating that the audio would not be played unless direct play was set to auto (sorry I don’t have the specific message in front of me to post). Rebooted Plex server (and FreeNAS server where files are kept) with same results. Tried both Ethernet and WiFi with same results. This behavior is repeatable with a few different files. Once started, it will play for around 15+ seconds before buffering. When I start a plex movie/TV show, it takes longer than usual to start (10-20secs). I have a Roku Ultra with s/w ver 6.15xxx and a Linux based Plex server (latest update), and I have recently begun having issues with buffering.
